School may be out for the summer, but a group of Nipomo High
School FFA students are still frequenting the campus two or three
times a week to prepare their turkeys for the Santa Barbara County
Fair.
None of them mind the trips to campus, since they know someone must
take care of the group’s four white toms, which were donated as
replacements for some of the 22 turkeys that were killed, injured
or ended up missing from cages near the NHS poultry department more
than two months ago.
Two local dogs — a border collie and a shepherd mix — attacked and
killed 19 turkeys overnight on April 26 and injured two others that
were put in the care of a local veterinarian. Another turkey was
never found, according to San Luis Obispo County sheriff’s
officials.
